He started playing the violin at the age of nine in the local music school in Česká Třebová with Eduard Vaníček. In 1979–1985, he studied viola at the Pardubice Conservatory with Antonín Ulrich and Ladislav Kyselák. He continued at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (AMU) with Lubomír Malý in 1985–1989. While studying, he played in various chamber ensembles. With the AMU string quartet (later Wihan Quartet), he succeeded at the Beethoven’s Hradec competition in 1987 and won the laureate title at the Prague Spring International Competition in 1988.
