He studied at the conservatory with Viktor Moučka, cellist from the Vlach Quartet, and later at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague with Josef Chuchro.

In 1983–2013, he was the Czech Philharmonic principal cellist. As a soloist, he has performed with the Czech Philharmonic, the Prague Symphony Orchestra, the Plzeň Philharmonic, the Spanish National Orchestra Madrid and many chamber ensembles.

He records music with various chamber ensembles and as a soloist for the Japanese recording label Pony Canyon, Supraphon, Bonton and the French recording company AMC.

He co-founded the Virtuosi di Basso chamber ensemble of ten cellos and two double basses in 2004 and has since celebrated success on stages in Prague, Japan and Germany.
