He studied at the Prague Conservatory with Professor Josef Svejkovský and later at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague with Václav Junek and Miroslav Kejmar. As a student, he joined the Prague Symphony Orchestra. He won the international competition Concertino Praga with his brother Zdeněk in 1972 and since then, they have been performing as soloists and members of the chamber ensembles Prague Brass Ensemble and Czech Brass in the Czech Republic and abroad. They have recorded music for labels including Supraphon, Panton, Vars, Rosa, Pony Canyon, Czech TV and Czech Radio. He has been teaching at the Prague Conservatory since 2003.
