Audition for Tuba Player

The Czech Philharmonic and its Chief Conductor and Music Director Semyon Bychkov announce an audition for the tuba player. This is a full-time position starting by appointment.

Audition date and place: 29th January 2027, Rudolfinum, Prague

Audition repertoire

Pre-selection video recording:

With the application, you will send a link to your uploaded video recording on YouTube. The recordings must not be older than 1 year. The concert recording must be with piano accompaniment.

  1. R. Vaughan Williams: Concerto for Tuba, 1st and 2nd movement

  2. B. Smetana: Vyšehrad (orchestral excerpt, see enclosed parts)

1st Round (blind audition):

1. R. Vaughan Williams: Concerto for Tuba (whole concerto incl. cadenzas)

2. Orchestral excerpts:

  • B. Smetana: My Country, cycle of symphonic poems (selection)

  • L. Janáček: Taras Bulba, rhapsody for orchestra

  • G. Mahler: Symphony No. 2 C minor

  • R. Wagner: Die Walküre, overture to the 3rd act of the opera

  • O. Respighi: Fountains of Rome

2nd Round (non-blind audition):

1. A. Lebedev: Concerto for Tuba No. 1 (whole concerto incl. cadenzas)
(for contrabasstuba)

2. Orchestral excerpts:

  • B. Smetana: Richard III., symphonic poem, Op. 11
  • B. Smetana: Wallenstein‘s Camp, symphonic poem, Op. 14
  • I. Stravinky: Petrushka
  • M. P. Mussorgsky / arr. M. Ravel: Pictures at an Exhibition
  • H. Berlioz: Fantastic Symphony, Op. 14
  • F. Mendelssohn: A Midsummer Night´s Dream, overture
  • A. Bruckner: Symphony No. 4 E-flat major
  • P. I. Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 4 F minor, Op. 36
  • R. Strass: Till Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche

You can apply for the audition until 17th December 2026.

How the audition works

All audition applicants must complete an application form, which includes links to video recordings of the prescribed tracks, by the due date. From the applications received, the selection committee will select applicants with the appropriate level of performance, experience and education and send them an invitation to audition.
