Snowflakes are falling outside the windows, but it’s warm inside and the smell of evergreen needles is everywhere. We hear Tchaikovsky’s magical music, and we set out for a fairytale kingdom… We’ll follow footprints in the snow, our drumming will overpower the Mouse King, until finally we dance our way to the Christmas tree. And then what? We’ll unravel whether it was all a dream…
Playing the harp might seem simple; after all, we can play a scale with just one finger! But in reality, it’s not as easy as it might look. This royal instrument can conjure up not only lovely, heavenly tones, but also frightfully devilish sounds. Get to know the harp up close and experience it as never before.
What’s it like to play at the Rudolfinum? Not hide and seek but to play in an orchestra, for example? Which way do the players in the Czech Philharmonic go to get on stage? Join us at the Rudolfinum to try out some of the vast arsenal of Orff instruments. With their help, we will accompany a song, learn how to hold the glockenspiel and xylophone mallets, and maybe find out that the conductor really is an important person. Which instrument of the orchestra plays the tuning note? That’s right, it’s the oboe! And what does it have in common with the English horn? Can you solve musical riddles just by their rhythm? And how long can you hiss like a snake? Did you know that oboists have to be skilled at woodworking?
The journey can be the destination. Come with us to a chamber concert of Antonín Dvořák’s music. Where are we going? As far as America. How are we travelling? With Dvořák’s favourite means of transport of course. Who is coming with us? The Norbert Quartet, real musical experts.
We’ll introduce you to the family of string instruments. They belong together, but each is a bit different. Dad and mom – the bass and cello, and the children – violin and viola. And just like any other family, they play together, but sometimes they can also be cross with each other. And they like to eat sweets together. Will we be able to solve some problems and riddles together and rescue Cordiera the Cook?

The concert led by Ondřej Tichý turns into a non-traditional musical encounter. Come to join the Czech Philharmonic musicians and their musical friends to sense the acoustic possibilities of the Dvořák Hall and to hear what is written within its walls.
In this project, pupils from elementary schools of the arts all around the Czech Republic encounter their experienced colleagues from the Czech Philharmonic. After half a year of intense preparations, the project culminates with joint rehearsals for a gala concert where the orchestra plays under the baton of Petr Altrichter.
Our concerts with the Czech Philharmonic Youth Orchestra tend to be voyages of discovery. We often attempt (figuratively) to get inside composers’ heads to see how they thought when writing a particular work, or we look for the important crossroads that were decisive for the form a work would take. But above all, we discover the music itself.
Come see and hear a remarkable number of percussion instruments! You will visit a world of traditional and exotic percussion: coconuts, gourds, and even hooves. We’ll show you the influence rhythmic accompaniments have on the sound of classical compositions, and there will also be film music. Everything will be in the form of an active workshop.
We also invite the elderly to non-traditional musical encounters. Everybody, regardless of age, abilities, and musical experience can join in. That's because above all it will be about the joy of new social bonds, the experience of listening to music, finding new links between rhythm, tempo, movement, instrumental colours, and the silence between the notes.
