A Journey to the Middle of Music
At the beginning of the ages, when sound did not yet have a name, the secret of “UMCULO” was born. To this day it is beyond the reach of modern science. The Xhosa word UMCULO recalls that ancient time. When you pronounce it with the correct intonation, it means “music”. Musicians, of course, are aware of this secret. And you will discover it, too.
Daring musical workshops for curious elementary school pupils in grades 1 through 4 and their teachers
The four workshops will deal with the origins and development of music from four different points of view. The first two gatherings will examine the structure of music – discovering rhythm, melody, harmony, and the possibilities of musical notation. The two workshops that follow will focus on inspiration, stories, and emotions. All of this will be done playfully and interactively with the use of games involving movement, singing, rhythm, the visual arts, theatre, and improvisation.
