European Orchestra Laboratory II

The Czech Philharmonic is an orchestra that has traditionally been perceived at home and on prestigious stages abroad as a leading representative of the Czech music world. For this very reason, in the years from 2017 to 2019 it will be opening itself up more to Romany from socially excluded locations in the Czech Republic and will be offering them collaboration in the field of music.

The project’s artistic director is the singer and choirmaster Ida Kelarová, and she, her artistic team, and the players of the Czech Philharmonic will be encountering the residents of local communities (and especially children) and will be engaging with them artistically in rehearsals and performances. The project outcome at the community level will be a concluding concert of a choir put together in this way at each of the locations. On a nationwide level, the project will climax in the spring of 2019 with a concert at the Rudolfinum, at which all of the involved communities will be participating. In addition, the children will get a chance to further develop their musical talents under the leadership of Ida Kelarová in the choir Čhavorenge, where they will be receiving regular attention. The project gives the musicians of the Czech Philharmonic room to show themselves as creative, inspirational personalities who are willing to learn about different musical traditions and approaches while looking for new ways to share their passion for the world of music.

EOLab II, which receives support from the Creative Europe programme, unites several European orchestras that are looking for new ways to reach the public and new was of actively involving musicians. The chief partners of the Czech Philharmonic in this laboratory are the Netherlands Symphony Orchestra, the Tonkünstler Orchestra (Austria), the Hallé Orchestra and the Ulster Orchestra (United Kingdom), the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra (Spain), and the National Symphony Orchestra of Romania.

The first concert took place in Chrudim on June 30th and in Vysoké Mýto on July 1st 2017. Next concerts will be held before Christmas 2017 and again in June in 2018. The chikdren rehearse every Thursday from 4 pm to 9 pm in Vysoké Mýto.
