František Host studied at the Conservatory in Prague under Viktor Moučka, a cellist of the Vlach Quartet, and at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague under Professor Josef Chuchro. Since 1975 he has been a member of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra; in 1983 he became the concertmaster of its cello section, a position he held until 2013.
As a soloist he has performed with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, Prague Symphony Orchestra, Pilsen Philharmonic Orchestra, the National Orchestra of Madrid and many chamber ensembles.
He is a member of the Czech Philharmonic Sextet, Czech Philharmonic Octet and Duo di Basso. Both as a chamber music player and a soloist he records for the Japanese label Pony Canyon, Czech labels Supraphon and Bonton as well as the French label AMC. In 2004, he founded the Virtuosi di Basso, an ensemble of ten cellos and two double basses, which has given concerts with great success in Prague, Japan and Germany.
