Czech Chamber Music Society
Graffe Quartet Brno
Laureate of the Czech Chamber
Music Society for the year 2008
Czech Chamber Music Society (CCMS) was founded in 1894 in Prague. In the autumn 2008 it will starts its 114th concert season. Over the course of these long years the concert visitors has heard the best what czech music culture and czech interpretive art have brought. The Society has always followed the latest developments in chamber music and its interpretation.
The CCMS concert platform has given preference to czech chamber ensembles sice the very beginning, however, to provide a certain amount of colour and contrast, the Society has also been welcoming foreign performer since its early days. This tradition was halted for a while after 1948, but has been re-introduced it in recent years.
One of the priorities of the CCMS is the presentation of contemporary czech works, including their premieres, which are often commissioned by the Society itself. Another priority is to care about young talented musicians. Every year the Czech Chamber Music Society awards the Czech Chamber Music Society Prize. The Prize is allotted to a young, promising chamber ensemble. This distinction brings the ensemble prestige and material support. Every year a commission comprised of musical specialists evaluates quartets, trios, duos and individual players. It is possible to name at least two young string quartets, today world-famous the Wihan Quartet and Škampa Quartet who have received this prize in recent years.
