Antonio Caldara has gone down in music history primarily as the Vizekapellmeister and court composer at Vienna’s imperial court. The central figure of the oratorio is the penitent Mary Magdalene at the feet of Jesus Christ at his crucifixion. The work dates back to the composer’s Italian period, and it is distinguished by its singular concentration and depth of musical expression and by its extraordinary melodic invention. One senses in this early work by Caldara the undeniable influence of his Venetian predecessors.
