Kanako Mori

Kanako Mori

I am a member of the horn section of the Orchestral Academy since 2017.

Education

I completed my Bachelor of Music at Doshisha Women’s College of Liberal Arts in Japan.

I was a private student of Ondřej Vrabec (Assistant to the Chief Conductor, Principal Horn: Czech Philharmonic Orchestra) and Ryo Koyama (Former Principal Horn: Kyoto Symphony Orchestra).

When I am not at the Rudolfinum...

Previous solo performances include playing Richard Strauss’s Horn Concerto no.1 with my university orchestra in 2013. I was also selected as member and appeared as first horn in the Asian Youth Orchestra in 2014 to perform in concert halls across Asia (Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, Japan).

Awards

During my university studies, I won the Third Prize (highest prize awarded) in the 22nd Japan Classical Music Competition in 2012.

My favourite music

I started to play horn when I was 12 years old. Then, I met the horn concerto No.3 by Mozart. When I first listened to it, I was shocked because I thought “why are the melodies so beautiful yet simple?". I first encountered the full horn sound through this. After this, I started listening to a lot of Mozart. As I grew up, I understood that Mozart’s music is very difficult in terms of expressing features in a refrained style. But that's what make it fun, too. I still need to learn more.
